Choosing a blog name is tough! You want it to encompass some part of what you’re trying to accomplish and what you stand for, but you don’t want to deceive potential readers at the same time. When I first started thinking about this blog a few years ago (*SIGH, yes years ago), I decided that I definitely needed a public Instagram account. At the time I didn’t just want to create an account with any name, I wanted it to embody who I was at that exact moment in time and essentially who I would become in the years to come. After much research and reading I decided on the name, “The Modern Essentialist.” It was perfect.

When defined the word “modern” means “a characteristic of the present or the immediate past.” This perfectly fit the sentiment I was trying to create with my page. It met me exactly where I was that day and yet it still had the potential to evolve with me as my life began to move and shift with the experiences I was about to come upon.

The word “Essentialist” then just kind of fell into place. For something to be essential, it must be basic and of the utmost importance. That was exactly what I envisioned for this blog… What are the basics of this modern life? What does one essentially need to live? What do I, as a young career woman, and new mother essentially need for a life well lived?

These questions are difficult to answer. Of course we all need the basics of food, water and shelter, but I want to explore the “essentials” at a deeper level.

At the depth of one’s soul, what do we really need to survive?

I feel the answer will be (and should be) different for every single one of us. We are all so uniquely different, therefore it would make sense that what “drives” us and essentially gives us life and spirit is different too!

So coming full circle I hope that this blog, The Modern Essentialist, is a place where we can create moments, share knowledge, ask questions, explore our differences and hopefully find common ground on elements that are essential to each of us!

My plan is to explore elements that are essential to my life such as family, career, health, culture and politics.

And please, feel free to send me any other topics you would like me to discuss! As I stated earlier, I want The Modern Essentialist to be a place that is constantly evolving and changing to our times.

Simply yours,

Martina
